The FEWS is used both to encrypt DVD-Video and to prepare
the content for downstream forensic watermarking.
What is it?
The Formatting and Encryption Workstation (FEWS) from
Cinea is a key component of the S-VIEW Secure DVD System. Together with
the SV300 Secure DVD Player and Cinea's key management and certification
infrastructure, these components provide an end to end solution for protecting
high value content distributed on DVD media.
The FEWS is the central component in the production system
used to both encrypt DVD-Video and prepare the content for downstream
forensic video watermarking. It works in tandem with the Cinea Facility
Server (CFS), which manages the secure communications between the FEWS
and Cinea's back-end operations center. The FEWS Installation Kit includes
a DLT tape drive plus all of the KVM & networking accessories required
to efficiently tie the FEWS and Facility Server workstations together.
How it works
The FEWS has been designed to "drop-in" between
the standard DVD authoring and duplication/replication workflow. This
workstation inputs finished authored content from standard DVD-Video authoring
systems and outputs a ready-for-replication file that has been encrypted
and prepared for decryption and watermark insertion in the SV300 Secure
DVD Player.
The FEWS system can be connected to a content server
via the local network in an authoring facility, or it can accept input
on DLT or DVD-R (for single layer titles). Output from the FEWS includes
a ready-for-replication file onto the server or a DDP formatted DLT, as
well as a DLT containing project restart and Running Marks M recovery
archives.
Order entry and management is provided via a Web-based
interface accessible by an authorized customer from any PC browser connected
to a secure Cinea website. Facility control and scheduling is managed
through a similar interface running locally on the Facility Server.
The FEWS connects via secure connection to Cinea's secure
back-end key management and authentication server via the Cinea Facility
Server (CFS).
The FEWS can also support content preparation for use
in Cinea's STRACK system that uniquely marks and tracks individual DVD-Rs
or VHS tapes.
S-VIEW Production System Architecture

Authoring
The S-View system requires a fully authored standard
DVD-Video project as input, with only a few restrictions:
- Leave 200 MB free space on the disc (on Layer 0 of a dual layer title).
- Do not enable CSS.
- Do not set Region code.
- Do not set parental levels.
- Author the main feature as one continuous VTS, in MPEG 2.
- Do not author angles.
- Add a "Cinea Audio Track" as the last audio track for the
title. "Cinea Audio Track" is a placeholder for watermarking
data that the Cinea system generates. The content of this track is not
important (the facility can use a track supplied by Cinea, or can generate
their own). We can provide a Dolby Digital 128 kHz file (containing
an audio test tone) 120 minutes in length, which is to be authored as
the last audio under the entire feature.
Author any navigation, menus, etc. as usual.
Production Workflow
The FEWS can operate as a stand-alone system or as a
network-connected device. A facility can author content on one or more
systems, then write the results to a server or to discrete media (DLT
or DVD-R). Each project is processed in the FEWS, then output for duplication
or replication.
A facility can write the output to a DLT from their network,
or transmit the project directly to a replication facility over a broadband
connection.
Steps are as follows
- Create a basic DVD-Video project (compress, author, multiplex)
a. The finished disc image is either placed on the facility's media
server, written to DLT (DDP format; single or dual layer), or burned
to DVD-R (single layer only, at this time).
- The DVD image is input to the FEWS
- Encryption and watermark pre-processing are performed in the FEWS.
For the basic FEWS set-up, processing time is approximately real time.
Speed can be enhanced by adding additional CPUs
- An S-VIEW disc image is created. The finished S-View disc image is
now ready for replication. It is stored to the facility's media server
or written to DLT by the FEWS.
- The FEWS creates an archive to type IV DLT of each project/title.
